a word

a word for the sound a skateboard wheel makes as it skims the earth evades me.

a walk with a friend this autumn

scarf contrast with red
radiant yet translucent
half step behind you

we stroll tumbling words
amidst the flow eddies found
autumn sun warm tea

a route familiar
now layered with new memory
i could walk like this

saskatoon

Tonight I walk streets I've walked before, amidst buildings where family has lived. Walking past the salon where the hair of bridesmaids and the bride were prepared before my wedding . Two blocks away a funeral home which I visited twice one brutally cold January. Like any other place we move through this is a place of celebration and sorrow.

autumn walk

Couples and friends and people with dogs populate these dark streets. In the temporary absence of those bonds i am not alone. The dharma does not play on this night. Instead I scroll finding and filling my head with songs of emotional weight. The words and chords chill me. Or is it the air.
With the music loud I cannot hear the wind. I can feel the wind and I can see the wind. The limbs of elms, full of summer's leaf, sway in the night's strong breeze. Light from street lamps tumbles through and creates shadow play on wet streets.
An indigo sky is revealed when the clouds have been blown away by this night's wind. That high and cold sky, having exposed me to the stars, makes my shelter, my home, all the more comforting.

breathe in

delivering cheer on my bike
fixed dodge and weave through fallen leaves
joy ascends from pedals to smile

work tethers me to its unique satisfaction
drawing breath i am free to wander
helmet in hand the streets open themselves

weekend near, autumn's beauty envelops
more expansive a weekend from school and work
we are all waiting for the bell to ring

number puzzle

piper completed this and i am both pleased and proud. i have never been able to do these things. i believe i lack the patience. i hope it is patience i lack and not some other, fundamental, cognitive skill.

the days are shortening and fall is almost upon us. labour day weekend is always a shift for me. this is when my year begins.

end another year
with joy borne of living well
shall we share this gift
