variations of a theme

restless toss and turn
can you know one is the one
awake why not sleep

[its been so long since i've been here, the blog, i almost feel like i need to dust and sweep.]

i found this marker significant for it marks the limit of the columbia icefield the first time i visited it when my family moved to alberta in 1981.

aside from that personal note what is more significant is how far the icefeild has moved back since then. this marker is at least a kilometer from the present edge. this was a very dramatic display of climate change for the kids and i when we visited this summer.

please reduce your carbon footprint, we try, even though we drove all over the prairies and mountains and use electricity to produce and disseminate information.

today the kids and i enter the mountains.

i will do this through longview alberta. the last time i was here was 11 years ago. piper was in mawney's womb and we arrived in longview to inter the ashes of mawney's mother, jenniece.

as an adolescent, jenniece had spent time in longview, to take care of the children of a local ranching family. mawney's namesake was one of those children.

this trip began the day before what would have been jenniece's 65th birthday. today she will be on our minds, i will regale the children with stories, and we will honour her by visiting the banks of the highwood river where it runs through longview.

running through our life
time cascades through it quickly
eddies are welcome

subject with sunset and signpost

i am in calgary, and after after four days, still in the beginning of a thus far delightful road trip with my kids. yesterday we saw the mountains on the horizon as we approached calgary from the badlands of drumheller. we are now within the warm embrace of my sister's home and catching up with her, my niece and my nephew.

much of the daily chatter of my life is now expressed through facebook which has led me to consider the role of this blog.

the blog seems to occupy, or can be employed as, a quieter space of reflection; poetry, writing, photography and advocacy; humanism, cycling, living lightly.....

no expectations
never diminished by fear
we ask for nothing

through spaces moving
routes taken rockier before
shod in self comfort

beyond possession
freedom to explore friendship
expansive we are

another flower has emerged in my 'garden.' i threw some seed down a couple years ago. it is not indifference to the land around my home that keeps me from the yard. interest in other things keeps me away. yet when i think of the potential.....
